Treat Tuesday-Chocolate Chess Squares

IMG_5022I have no clue why this dessert has the name “Chess Squares.”  It’s one of those treats I have been making for years and every time I serve it my family goes on and on about how great it is and wonders why I have never made it before.  Maybe it has something to do with the game of chess which I recently learned, but I don’t see how a rook or bishop would play into this, unless they were made of chocolate.

IMG_5013Once again, this recipe starts with a shortbread crust.  Not sure why I am gravitating towards shortbread, but you have to admit, it makes a great base to build upon.

IMG_5015The chocolate batter is poured on top and baked until the top becomes flakey and the middle is almost like a super thick pudding.

IMG_5025When the pan is just slightly warm, remove the treat by the foil from the pan and carefully peel it back so as not to loose any of the great crust.  Cut into squares and let cool completely before serving.

IMG_5019There is no way you can resist taking a square as you walk by the pan.  Checkmate.
