Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce

This is an easy cake that can feed a lot of people. The caramel sauce takes the flavors to the next level!
Plan Ahead Note: the butter and eggs need to be brought to room temperature.

Ingredients
  

Apple Cake
  • ¾ cup butter softened to room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups peeled, chopped Granny Smith apples
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Caramel Sauce
  • ¾ cup butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¾ cup heavy cream

Method
 

Apple Cake
  1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13" x 9" pan.
  2. Cream butter and sugar in a large bowl.
  3. Beat in eggs one at a time.
  4. Sift together dry ingredients and add to egg mixture alternately with apples.
  5. Stir in vanilla.
  6. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 40-50 minutes.
  7. Cool in pan for 5 minutes before cutting into squares. Serve warm.
Caramel Sauce
  1. Combine all ingredients in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly.
  3. Immediately remove from heat and spoon over individual servings of warm cake.
