Treat Tuesday-Warm Apple-Buttermilk Custard Pie

Apple Buttermilk PieIt’s fall.  Literally, today was the first day of fall and it was a beautiful, crisp morning outside.  As tempted as I was to dive straight into pumpkin recipes, I actually had a craving for apples and cinnamon.  Hence this pie.  However, today was one of those crazy outrageous days that would not lend itself to homemade pie crust.  Usually when I bake it is all from scratch or nothing, but I really wanted to smell cinnamon in my kitchen today so…hello store bought crust.

It is apple season now, and while I am devouring Honeycrisp and Zestar Apples, my favorite pie apples are Granny Smith.

The Granny Smiths won’t break down and become mealy when you cook them and beginning with a tart apple gives your pie the right amount of sweet once you add the sugar.

Once the apples become tender, you simply roll the crust into the pie plate and pour this heavenly mixture on top.  Next is the buttermilk custard over the apples and then the pie bakes until the custard is slightly set.

The streusel topping is added (probably the best part!) and the pie continues to bake until golden brown and set.  Let cool for up to one hour and serve with vanilla ice cream.  Apple Pie meets Buttermilk Pie.

Welcome Autumn
