Slow-Simmered Meat Sauce
This recipe works best if you make it the night before you want to serve it, the flavors intensify for a nice, rich sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cups chopped onion
- 1 cup chopped carrot
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 pkg. hot Italian Turkey sausage
- 1 lb. ground sirloin
- ¼ cup tomato paste
- 1 ½ teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 1 28oz. can crushed tomatoes undrained
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 Tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
- 16 oz. large flat noodle pasta cooked according to package directions
- ½ cup chopped fresh basil
- 3 oz. grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat.
- Add onion and carrot to pan; sauté 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add garlic; sauté 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Place vegetable mixture in a slow cooker.
- Add sausage (with casings removed) and beef to skillet; sauté 6 minutes or until browned, stirring to crumble.
- Drain beef mixture from skillet and add to slow cooker.
- Add in tomato paste, sugar, salt, red pepper, crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce.
- Cover and cook on LOW 8 hours.
- Stir in oregano.
- Cool and refrigerate overnight. Reheat on the stove and serve over cooked pasta, topped with basil and parmesan.
